Privacy and Confidentiality Policy

At Another Light Counselling, we prioritize your privacy and confidentiality with the highest level of professionalism and ethical responsibility. This policy outlines how we handle, store, and share your personal and therapeutic information to ensure the security and integrity of your data.

1. Confidentiality of Client Information

  • All personal and therapy-related information shared during sessions is strictly confidential and protected under professional ethical guidelines.
  • One-on-one contact outside the therapy setting is not possible due to internal policies and confidentiality measures.
  • Your therapist will never discuss your case details with anyone outside of a professional setting.

2. Secure Storage of Notes and Data

  • Session notes and therapy-related records are securely stored in our organization’s private data vault.
  • These records are exclusively accessed by our founder and executive team members bound by contract. Hence, the records are not shared with any other individual within or outside the organization.
  • Your information is never used for external purposes, research, or shared with third parties without your explicit consent.

3. Information Sharing with a New Therapist

  • If you choose to transition to a new therapist within ALC, your therapy notes will only be transferred upon your explicit request and consent internally.
  • If you choose to transition to a new therapist outside ALC, your therapy notes will only be transferred upon your explicit request and consent. The client is not entitled to get the access to their therapy notes as these notes are meant for therapist’s access and contain jargons that can only be comprehended by the therapist.
  • Upon confirmation, our founder directly shares your relevant notes with your new therapist, ensuring a smooth transition while maintaining your privacy.
  • No information is shared automatically or without your knowledge.

4. Supervision and Case Discussions

  • Your therapist may discuss aspects of your case with their supervisor to enhance your therapy process. These discussions focus on professional guidance and are conducted in a strictly confidential manner.
  • No personal identifiers or unnecessary details are shared outside of supervision settings.

5. Trainee and Junior Therapist Participation

  • Occasionally, trainee or junior therapists may observe sessions for learning and professional development.
  • This will only occur with the client's informed consent.
  • Clients have the right to decline the presence of an observer without any impact on their therapy experience.

6. Exceptions to Confidentiality

While we uphold strict confidentiality, there are legal and ethical circumstances where disclosure may be necessary:

  • If there is a risk of harm to yourself or others.
  • If there is any disclosure of abuse, neglect, or harm involving minors, elderly individuals, or vulnerable persons.
  • If required by law or court order.
  • In situations where the therapist deems it necessary to protect the safety of the client or others.

In such cases, your therapist will make reasonable efforts to discuss the need for disclosure with you before taking any action, unless it is an emergency situation where immediate intervention is required.

7. Client Rights and Control Over Information

  • Clients have the right to request access to their therapy records.
  • Clients can ask for corrections or clarifications in their stored data.
  • Clients have the right to withdraw their consent for sharing information at any time.
